I had that same aspiration and finally did it. Once in 2009 I drove up to Alaska from the Seattle area on a solo road trip to Haines, and it was amazing! Took the AK Marine Hwy on the way back. Then last summer I went up to Lake Clark National Park on a guided bear trip.
